Why you want Gladiolus Abyssinian gladiolus in your garden

A wonderfully fragrant member of the gladioli family, the Abyssinian gladiolus. Snow-white, slightly drooping, curved flowers with a dark purple center and golden pistils. These white flowers adorn the garden from late summer into autumn.

Abyssinian gladioli, also known as sword lilies, have bright green, grassy, pointed leaves, topped by white flowers. They bloom a little later in the summer, from August until the first frost. Their most important characteristic, in our opinion, is the intense perfume with which these flowers welcome you.

Small bulbs with a big impact. The perfect description for gladioli. Most people only know gladioli as cut flowers, but they certainly look great in the garden too. You don't need a green thumb to plant and flower gladioli. Plant the bulbs in a sunny spot in the garden, preferably in large groups. It always looks better to have a large bunch of flowers together.

Gladioli are prolific, hard-working bloomers and perfect as cut flowers. They have a long shelf life, making them a real winner in the garden and living room.

Care

  • Plant gladioli in spring when there's no frost, or plant them earlier in a flowerpot and let them grow in a frost-free area. After growing, the gladioli can be transplanted to the garden.
  • Gladioli are true sun lovers, so plant them in a sunny spot. Plant the gladioli with the pointed end of the bulb facing up.
  • Plant the gladioli about 10 to 15 cm deep and about 5 to 10 cm apart.
  • If you are growing gladioli in a pot, make sure the pot has a minimum height of 30 cm.
  • Water the gladioli thoroughly when planting, ensuring the soil doesn't dry out. Watering once or twice a week is sufficient. If the gladioli are potted, make sure there's a hole in the bottom so excess water can drain.
  • Gladioli prefer well-drained soil. Prepare the soil thoroughly before planting by mixing garden soil with potting soil. If you have heavy garden soil, you can add a little sand or compost for good drainage.
  • Once gladioli have finished blooming, the flowers can be cut away. It's important to leave the green leaves until they turn yellow-brown, then the entire plant can be cut back.
  • Gladioli are moderately winter-hardy. In mild winters, the bulbs can actually remain in the garden, provided they are well covered with a good winter covering (fleece, a layer of leaves, straw, or peat moss). Gladioli in a flowerpot should be overwintered in a frost-free location.
