Dahlia 'After Dusk' – deep red water lily dahlia for garden and vase
The Dahlia 'After Dusk' is a beautiful water lily dahlia in a rich, deep burgundy. The flowers are approximately 10 cm across and grow sturdy stems that reach 80 to 100 cm tall. It combines beautifully with other light pink shades and creates a rich color contrast in your border. The flowers appear from July onwards and continue blooming well into autumn, often until the first frost.
Flowering and growth
Dahlia 'After Dusk' is a prolifically flowering dahlia that brings color to the garden all summer and into late summer. The water lily-shaped flowers have a soft, upward-facing bloom and appear even more intense at dusk. Thanks to its sturdy stems, this dahlia is ideal as a cut flower. In a bouquet, it adds depth and a warm appearance. The more often the flowers are cut, the more new buds will form, allowing you to enjoy an abundance of blooms for months.
Location and care
This dahlia prefers a sunny spot and well-drained, fertile soil. Plant the tubers in spring, about 30cm apart and a few centimeters deep. Make sure the old stem remains just visible above the soil. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and remove spent flowers to encourage flowering.
It's advisable to dig up the tubers before winter and store them frost-free. In mild winters, the tubers can remain in the ground, provided they are well covered with a thick layer of straw or leaves.
