Dahlia 'Madeleine' – a cactus dahlia in shades of pink and purple
Dahlia 'Madeleine' is a new addition to my collection this year. It's a cactus dahlia that immediately stands out with its playful petals and warm color palette. Its flowers range from dark pink to purple, with a hint of coral. What's special is that the color changes throughout the bloom: as they open, the shades are deeper and more intense, while they become lighter and softer as the flower ages. It feels like you have a new flower in your garden every week.
Flowering and growth
Dahlia 'Madeleine' blooms profusely from summer until the first frost. The flowers have an airy, playful cactus shape and grow to about 15 cm across. With a height of about 100 cm and sturdy stems, it can withstand a summer storm or rain shower. Regularly prune flowers for the vase. The more often you prune flowers, the more new buds the plant will continue to produce.
Location and care
Plant the corms as soon as the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil so the plants can grow vigorously. Regular watering is appreciated during dry weeks. Removing spent flowers promptly prolongs flowering and encourages new buds. In autumn, you can dig up the corms for frost-free storage, or protect them with a thick layer of mulch during mild winters.
