Dahlia 'Senior's Hope' – warm color play in mauve and red
Dahlia 'Senior's Hope' doesn't exactly live up to its name, but don't let that fool you, because its color palette is truly magical. From a distance, it appears aubergine purple, but up close, you'll see that each flower boasts a mixed palette of mauve, raspberry red, a hint of gold, and a dark raspberry-wine color on the backs of the petals. This layered color palette gives it great depth and ensures that no two flowers look exactly alike.
Flowering and growth
Dahlia 'Senior's Hope' blooms profusely from summer until the first frost. The flowers are about 12 cm across and carried high on sturdy, long stems of about 100 cm. Ideal for picking and putting in a vase, because besides its striking colors, it also holds its shape surprisingly well. The more often you cut, the more buds the plant will continue to produce, so you'll have new flowers all summer long.
Location and care
Plant the tubers after the last frost in loose, fertile soil and choose a sunny spot. During dry spells, provide some extra water to encourage flowering. Removing spent flowers will prolong the flowering period. In winter, dig up the tubers and store them in a frost-free location, or cover them with mulch in mild winters.
