Why you want Dahlia Thomas A. Edison in your garden
Dahlia 'Thomas A. Edison' – Dinnerplate dahlia in deep purple
Dahlia 'Thomas A. Edison' is one of those old favorites that never dies. This variety has been cultivated for over 90 years and remains popular, and rightly so. Its enormous, 25cm-long flowers have a deep, dark purple center that lightens slightly toward the edges.
Flowering and growth
Dahlia 'Thomas A. Edison' belongs to the dinner plate dahlia family, meaning its flowers can grow up to 25 cm across, the size of a dinner plate. The plants grow to 120 cm tall and carry their flowers firmly on long stems. It blooms profusely from summer until the first frost and continues to produce new buds even when you cut off the flowers.
Location and care
After the last frost, plant 'Thomas A. Edison' in loose, well-drained soil with plenty of sun. During dry spells, it appreciates some extra water. Regularly removing spent flowers will prolong flowering and encourage new bud formation. In winter, dig up the tubers and store them frost-free, or protect them with a thick layer of mulch in mild winters.
Combination tip
I personally find it beautiful next to soft pastel shades like Dahlia Linda's Baby.
