Begonia flower bulbs for a low-maintenance garden
Are Begonias old-fashioned? We think differently! They are beautiful.summer bloomersBegonias deserve a place in every garden. With their subtropical roots, they brighten up many a dull patio and house. They're also versatile, thriving both indoors and outdoors. And they require little care. This makes a low-maintenance garden or patio within reach of everyone, even if you don't have a green thumb! Begonias tolerate direct sunlight, but you do need to water them regularly in a sunny spot. Dry soil is a no-go for begonia bulbs, and a little fertilizer every two weeks will be enough. Also, regularly remove wilted flowers to make room for new blooms.
Begonia bulbs from tropical regions
Begonias are native only to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and America. Eventually, the plant arrived in Belgium via Great Britain. It was Louis van Houtte from Ghent who discovered that these begonia bulbs were ideal for growing in open ground. This is how begonia cultivation began in East Flanders in the nineteenth century. From the hairy brown begonia bulbs, tender shoots with asymmetrical leaves grow. The stems bear male and female flowers, with the female flowers having fewer petals. Plant the begonia tubers in spring with the concave side facing up and space them about 15 centimeters apart. As soon as summer arrives, you can enjoy these colorful plants for months to come!
Begonia tubers provide enormous diversity
The number and diversity of begonia bulbs is enormous. There are more than 1,000 wild forms. Add to that the cultivated varieties, and you could say that begonias are one of the most extensive genera in ornamental horticulture. Generally speaking, begonia tubers can be divided into two groups: those that produce upright begonias and those that produce trailing varieties. Within the upright varieties, we also distinguish double-flowered begonias, small-flowered begonias, and single-flowered begonias. The trailing varieties are, of course, perfect for decorating your windowsill or hanging in flower boxes on your balcony. These cheerful eye-catchers easily provide five months of colorful floral joy!
